It is as horrible to Bernaard, as it is to anyone with a minimal sense of justice, to see the Olympic torch pass through the streets of Lhasa with thousands of people dancing and celebrating to the tones and rhythms of the authoritarian Chinese regime.

How could the Olympic committee accept that the torch passed through occupied territory—a country in which ethnic Tibetans have been suppressed and killed? Did the committee not realise that this is a victory to the dictators of China, an acceptance of China’s ethnic cleansing of Tibet? Perhaps the committee has been convinced by Chinese propaganda claiming that Tibet has been Chinese all the time? (Which is nothing but one of several lies generated by the Chinese system.)

308 norwegians disappeared on the eastern front in Russia, and most of them were serving in Waffen-SS (read about this in Norwegian). They were obviously killed and buried, and since Norwegian authorities considered them traitors, no serious attempts were made to bring their bones back to Norway. Now, the relatives want them back, and they want the Norwegian state to pay.

It is a positive development that the issue finally might be discussed openly, and although these young men did serve the enemy, they were also family members and human beings. I just don’t see the point in spending millions and millions on recovering bones that slowly are disintegrated and recycled in the ecosystem. Whatever the status and nature of the person, hero or villain, bones are bones. How did it come to this, that the biological remains of a human are such an emotional and powerful symbol?
